Pedelecs..........and getting away from the van. (Part 1)

This is a tale recalling our foray into the joys of electric bike ownership, which I thought might prove useful to others considering the same. Our bikes are pedal assisted bikes (pedelecs) and not the throttle assisted or power on demand type of electric bike, the use of which, are now forbidden in many countries. A  pedelec  (from  ped al  ele ctric  c ycle) is a bicycle where the rider's pedalling is assisted by a small electric motor; thus they are a type of low-powered e-bike. However, unlike some other types of e-bikes, pedelecs are classified as conventional bicycles in many countries by road authorities rather than as a type of electric moped. Pedelecs include an electronic controller which cuts power to the motor when the rider is not pedalling or when a certain speed – usually 25 km/h (16 mph) – has been reached. Our two day stop-over in Colmar meant we now had just three more nights of our summer holiday to go........the clock was ticking down, but we were determined to see just a little bit more of continental Europe before we headed home. Ordinarily, I've passed-by Colmar many times on the final day of our holidays, heading for Calais in one drive (a distance of 400+ miles) making for Strasbourg, picking up the A4 toll route to Metz, then going toll free through Luxembourg, Belgium and finally making for Cite Europe ready for the Euro Shuttle the next day. For many, I'm sure the distance involved is too much of a chore, however, I enjoy the drive (Belgium roads apart) and if you can get away early morning Cite Europe is easily reachable by late afternoon / early evening and certainly within sufficient time to conduct a last shop in Carrefour and use up those excess euro's! However, on this occasion time was on our side and so I thought it best we make a slight detour
